Texas Court of Criminal Appeals Judge Lawrence “Larry” Meyers announced his intentions for re-election to a fourth term on June 10, 2009. He has served on Texas' highest court for criminal cases since first being elected in 1992 and is the Court’s longest serving member. Judge Meyers was the first Republican and Court of Appeals Justice to be elected to the Court, having previously served as an associate justice on the Second Court of Appeals in Fort Worth from 1989 to 1992.

By virtue of his Fort Worth Court service, Meyers is the third longest tenured judge of an Appellate Court in Texas. During his 20 years on the bench, Meyers has authored the second most appellate opinions in Texas, and is especially noted for Elizondo v. State of Texas which recognized for the first time in non-death penalty cases the concept of “actual innocence.”

He earned his B.A. in history and chemistry from Southern Methodist University in 1970
and his J.D. from the University of Kansas School of Law in 1973. Judge Meyers received
his L.L.M. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1998. He is also Board Certified
in Criminal Law and a court liaison to the State Bar of Texas’ board of directors.
